Configuration Item (CI) is a concept from the IT-Management. According to the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) the term Configuration Item means all equipment and IT services. Examples are PCs, peripheral equipment, all network components, server, documentation, process instruction, IT-Services, Software (Sourcecode, Executables) and tools.
CIs are stored in a specific database in the Configuration Management Database (CMDB). This is not a form of the Digital Asset Management.
According to ITIL solely those CIs are stored in the CMDB, which are necessary for the IT administration. In addition to that, relations among the CIs are also saved. Because CIs are fundamental elements for the IT operation, they are also a matter for the IT monitoring. That means, the function standby of the CIs is going to be monitored. Because of the saved relations among the CIs in the CDMB, the effects in case of an error can be derived to other CIs and services.
An error is also labeled Incident (refer to Incident Management), and multiple repeated Incidents can also be classified as Problem. Descriptions and relations among other CIs, RfCs, CRs , Problems and Instance information (Version, Location, Model Number, u.a.) are the most important information that a CI compromises.
